Skanska-Hunt Selected as General Contractor/Construction Manager
The team of Skanska-Hunt, a Joint Venture, is the successful general contractor in the competition to provide general contractor/construction manager (GC/CM) services for the proposed addition to the Washington State Convention Center (WSCC), subject to completion of contract negotiations. The existing WSCC is located at 800 Convention Place in downtown Seattle.
A public bid opening on fee proposals was held today, following an extensive evaluation process that included RFQ and RFP processes, short list to three finalists, and day-long interviews with each. Other teams on the short list were Mortenson-PCL, a Joint Venture, and Clark/Lewis, a Joint Venture.
Since opening in 1988, the WSCC has been a meetings industry leader in service quality, innovation and revenue generation. The existing multi-level facility hosts more than 40 national conventions annually in addition to a variety of regional and local events on any given day. Demand continues to grow for a facility large enough to successfully attract the size of national conventions that want to come to Seattle. The center's 205,700 square feet of heavy-load exhibition space no longer meets the needs of an increasing number of conventions, tradeshows, and local and regional corporate clients.
The addition project is intended to approximately double the size of the existing facility. Features of the new facility, which is proposed to be constructed to the northeast of the existing facility, are approximately 250,000 square feet of exhibit space, approximately 120,000 square feet of meeting room space, and an additional ballroom. Construction is planned to begin in 2017 and be completed in 2020. The project is estimated to cost approximately $1.4 billion.
Pine Street Group L.L.C. is the project manager for the addition. The architect is LMN; structural and civil engineering services are being provided by MKA. All are Seattle firms.
